MohsMohs micrographic surgery is the most effective skin cancer removal technique in modern medicine. It was introduced in the 1930s, and has evolved into the gold-standard for difficult to treat cancers. Because the procedure is quite complex, few dermatologists are trained in this advanced technique. Dr. Ashvin Garlapati had the opportunity to train in Florida under some of the finest Mohs surgeons in the nation. He has brought his unique expertise and extensive experience to Northwest Indiana, offering this specialized treatment at Dermatology Center of Northwest Indiana.
Benefits of Mohs micrographic surgery
The process removes all detected cancer with precision and preserves the maximum amount of healthy tissue. Mohs has a 99 percent cure rate, which is higher than any other type of treatment modality. It also yields better cosmetic outcomes than the alternatives.
Mohs surgery is typically recommended for skin cancer when:
- The tumor is on the face or in another cosmetically sensitive area
- It is large or fast-growing
- There is a high risk for recurrence (including cancer that returned after another type of treatment)
- The edges are poorly defined
- There is pre-existing scar tissue in the area
The procedure is performed right here in our office, using a local anesthetic to minimize your pain and ensure your comfort. Dr. Garlapati will first remove the visible portion of the tumor. A thin layer is removed and examined for cancerous cells. Using the result as a map, another layer is then removed if cancerous cells remain. Again, it is analyzed and used to guide the next layer. This is repeated until no more cancerous cells are detected. Healing time will vary because each case is unique. Cosmetic reconstruction may be performed the same day as the surgery or at a later date, depending on the complexity of the case. During your consultation, Dr. Garlapati will discuss reconstruction, aftercare instructions, and any other concerns you may have.
